The following comment is a hypothetical scenario/conversation between Venus and my OC "Fanboy" (Who is basically just me only more mentally unstable)
Thanks to Fanboy's interdimensional technology, he was able to transport Venus out of purgatory.
Venus: Thanks for getting me out of there.
Fanboy: No problem, but the only thing is that you weren't in the afterlife.
Venus: Pardon?
Fanboy: I have traveled to and from the afterlife to visit my mother on multiple occasions. The dimension you were in was some sort of artificial purgatory. Almost as if someone trapped you in there. Can you recall how you died?
Venus: Actually, no. I thought I just died in my sleep.
Fanboy: Well, you're alive now. I'm gonna get to the bottom of this. In the meantime, you'll have to stay with me for a while since you're not safe staying here.
Venus: Um, ok. By the way Fanboy, what is the afterlife like.
Fanboy: It's nothing to spectacular. In fact, it's pretty damn similar to our realms. Has good weather though.
Fanboy managed to figure out that Venus was imprisoned by someone who wanted revenge on both Fanboy & Venus for the murder of his brother. The brother in question was beaten to death by Fanboy for attempting to rape Venus. The vengeful brother was murdered by Fanboy and Venus was able to go home.

It's pretty much the MLP version of that. Though its portrayed more like a jail and its been proven that one doesn't have to be dead to get chucked in there.
The halo kind of throws things off a bit, but it could still work. I'd lean more to a purgatory with a jerk for an attendant.
