My first solo was on October 12, 1996 at McChesney Field in San Luis Obispo, CA. Very few things have compared to it since. I was nervous as hell, but once in the air I felt like I was on top of the world.

Yes, yes, visually clean in the last panel, I mean would not want the back of the instrument panel blocking the shot, or just a length of whatever the rod is called, collective maybe, the control stick is connected to heading out the bottom of the panel...
Sadly, placement (And I really don't see where else it could have gone.) Makes the stick of joy seem somewhat happier, given the young man's expression.
Sorry.

Music running through my head on the occasion of my first solo back in 1982... :D

That's intentional. I often omit the instrument panel and the rest of the controls if they're going to interfere with the view. The instrument panel would block 2/3 of the view. Even if I omitted that and still drew the horizontal part of the control stick, it would appear as this big grey bar extending into the lower middle of the panel. I don't have any formula for how and when I include or exclude them, I just go by what ever I think looks good when I'm doing the pencil drawings.
