Meanwhile...
Frysco pushed the branches aside and made his way into the garden's center. "I'm not a thief..." He said in hushed words. "But I won't let this go on." He heard a rustle of grass and leaves and nocked three arrows to fire from his bow. "Who's there?!" He cried out quickly and quietly at the ready.
"Shh-" A bat's leather gloved paw came up through the brush. "Shhhhh. Seriously, you'll get us both caught."
"Well you're the thief! I didn't want to sign up for this crazy plan of yours!" The bird lowered his bow and slid his arrows back into their quiver. "Why would anyone ever want to break into the Rubbermancer's Castle?! This garden is huge, and filled with who knows how many kinky traps! This is crazy, we shouldn't be here!"
"It's not my plan, I was just hired for it. Besides we're already being paid well just to try this, so think of the bonus should we succeed! Word in the scrying circles of the realm is there's a prophecy about a weapon that can bring down the rubbermancer queen. We find it, then give it to our employer. Then he sells it to the highest heroic bidder, and boom, we're set for life." The bat's head popped out of the brush and smiled wide. "So that's why we're splitting up. You search the Queen's garden, and I go into the sub-basement. The first one to find it chimes back with a communication spell and we slip away without ever being seen."
"Why do I let you drag me into these things..." Frysco sighed and looped his bow over his shoulder. "Why not just get another thief then? Why me? Surely you could have bothered someone else to help with this cockamamie plan of yours."
"I could have, but where would I be without my best bud's archery skills? Besides what if the weapon we're after is a bow? I don't know anything about quality archery tools, so if we find one you'll have to test it for authenticity." The bat ducked his head down under the brush again, and his voice grew ever more distant. "Just search the garden for a while and don't get caught. I believe in ya buddy!"
"Just search the garden awhile huh? Hrrr...." Frysco pushed through the brush and moved about the trees. The plan made sense to him at least. If there was a weapon that could take down Kauko, then Kauko herself would keep it hoarded away. But scryers were often wrong, and fortune-telling wasn't a science. Doing something this crazy based on a prophecy was just bad all around, but at least they were getting paid well for it. Frysco ducked under a pair of branches and pushed his way through a bramble various bright orange flowers that looked from a far away land. "At least I got the pretty job, no basement dungeoning for me. Ah, there it is." The ranger's eyes spied a bow wedged into the trunk of a tree settled in the garden's center. If Kauko's weakness was that bow, it would have to be his. "Just have to make my way over..."
Frysco moved in relative silence until he reached the bow half wedged into the tree's bole and examined how to extricate it's well-crafted body from the bark and wood. "Maybe if I just pull on it." Frysco grabbed the bow grip and knew he immediately would regret that decision. "Oh no..." The weapon warped and twisted around his hand, merging with it and covering it in a fine layer of resin stiff rubber. "Crap crap crap crap crap-" The bow revealed itself to be a branch of a tree that began to suck Frysco into its body. The pull of the resin hard glossy tree could not be staved, and the ranger found himself sinking deeper into the tree's body, already one of his legs being covered in a tight shiny shell, his forest dyed armor ripping to tatters. In a panic he used the only thing he knew to use, the communication spell he'd been given. "Winds of ephemeral connections, carry my words to my allies so we may speak. Go!" The ranger's free arm glowed a soft blue as a runic circle of charms floated around him. "Hey! Hey come on man! Listen I need help, I'm being eat-hmmph. Hmm? MMmph!" The resin spread quickly and glazed over his open mouth filling it with a ball of sticky sweet murkiness.
*Fzzzt*-Huh? I can't hear a word your saying. But just hold tight and don't move. I think what we're after is down here. There's a chest and- huh? Oh no no aaaaaaaah- *fzzzt*
'Hold tight he says...' Frysco thought as his mind began to fog. His body fidgeted as it was nearly impossible to move, half submerged and merged with the tree. Even his hands began to sprout leaves as the bark and branches wound around him tighter. 'I'll hold tight alright.' A shadow moved across the garden, and the ranger felt a hand brush his rubber coated face. "Mmmmph...."
"My my...what has my little sap tree caught." Kauko said with a devilish grin. "I'll have to make sure to have fun with you later. For now, there's a bat in my belfry..."
