The game really didn't play well at all first thing. My sister's fiancee didn't mince words when it came to how poorly the game played, but both he and my friends saw the potential for something great in the game. This optimism kept me going as I came up with idea after idea for improvement. One of the first improvements was to designate "slots" for fighter, support, and a main element. That idea didn't completely fix the game's design, but it facilitated it in a good direction.
