Arrangement of Mvt I from Franck's Symphony in D Minor
The above MIDI file is an arrangement I made for Concert Band of the first movement of Cesar Franck's Symphony in D Minor. This is one of my all time favorite works of music. It means a great deal to me and has been very influential in my own music.
The movement is written in Sonata-Allegro form, and the shape of the form is fairly easy to follow, which makes it an excellent piece to study. I think everyone should spend some time arranging existing works in other mediums. It will help them build up their musical vocabulary both melodically and harmonically (not to mention give them practice with orchestration!).
I attempted several such arrangements, but this was the only one I ever completed. I am responsible for the arrangement, not the musical ideas.

I first learned of him in a Music Theory class on Form and Analysis. That Summer home from College I went to the library and borrowed a handful of CDs which had some of the music I'd heard about in my classes. This include the Franck Symphony, Brahms's 3rd Symphony, Roy Harris and William Schuman's third symphonies, Shostakovich's 1st Piano Concerto, and I can't recall what else. I played them over and over again while I was playing the game Chrono Trigger. I can't hear any of those pieces without thinking about the game anymore ironically.
I heartily recommend each of them. They are among my favorite Classical works now.
As for the arrangement, probably four to five months. It's not as bad as composing often because I have the score right in front of me. That's another thing I recommend, buy as many orchestral scores as you can get your paws on! It's amazing what you can learn just by listening to a piece and following along in the score.

As always with strings, you have to decide that on a case by case basis. For instance, in the opening bars, we hear the Cello intone a melody based on a simple three-note motif. This I transplanted to the Bari Sax. Why? Because it has the right tone for the brooding, introspective quality of the opening. In other places I moved some of the high string effects to the flutes. It really does depend on the situation. And it makes you think about how to balance the voices.
I can't promise that my arrangement is a balanced piece. Nobody's ever looked at it other than me. And I know if I were to look over it again, I'd do a few things different. But it was a fun learning experience and I utterly treasure this music.
And definitely look up the rest of this symphony, and hear it played by a real orchestra. It will take your breath away. And to think it was panned at its first performance!
Thanks for the Fave!
