I'm experimenting a bit with a faster colouring style for use in some potential projects down the road. Generally speaking, shading with grey is a bit of a no-no in the art world, but painting simple watercolour washes over a bit of ink detail sure is a fast way to make some shading happen. It does lose a bit of flavor but seems to save quite a bit of time, which could be useful in larger scale stuff. So, since I found myself with some free time today I decided to try it out a bit... would be curious to know what you guys think!
Just a quick doodle btw, didn't focus much on anatomy so it's a bit wonky. I wasn't really planning on scanning this when I started it, but it's GCF and I know he's got a bit of a fan base 'round here, so here we are.

It does seem to be a little bit less detailed than some of your other stuff, particularly on his hands and arms. Then again, it's a fairly small piece, too, so it's hard to say whether that's thanks to the new method or just the small size. All in all, though, I think it looks really good and if you're happy with doing the washes for some quick shading I think it could definitely work out well. I like the look you've achieved with this, especially on the green parts of his fur, and I can't see that the shading looks too awfully different than what you've done in the past.
Besides, cute feminine fox boys wearing corsets are always a plus in my book! I love his sweet, happy expression, and he's just so beautiful!

It's a bit less detailed sorta by design, I'm looking for a method I can use when doing bigger projects to speed things up, and sacrificing some detail comes with the territory. I'm glad to hear it still looks alright despite that though- that's what I was hoping for! :3
Thanks a bunch!

I dunno
The color of the shading seems like its all flat and lifeless, and it washes out all the other color instead of darkening it (Bottom part of the corset), Plus it seems kind of messy around the top of the chest, below the chin. It just doesn't look like fur shading.
The ink lines however, I do like. Crisp and clean!

The messiness is down to me being lazy, this experiment was more about colour than texture so I didn't spend a ton of time there. That could be cleaned up easily enough.
The lack of life is definitely a thing though, I agree, that's the tradeoff you make when shading with grey ink. Simplicity vs depth- I'm trying to find a balance for when I work on bigger stuff. Couldn't really get away with full detail like my normal work if I was doing a big colour comic for example.
Still, I'm playing with things and this might never get used, we'll see!

Have you tried shading with a color of ink instead of just grey? I figure using a color instead would turn out similar to how digital artists doing cell shading will frequently use a layer of light prple, peach, or blue for the shadows. It still might look a little flatter but wont suck the intensity out like grey does.
I think the general idea is that you usually want shadows to get cooler as they get darker (not true for all lighting situation but generally the sun = warm colored light, so the spots getting less light have less warmth to them), but blue can be a little to far down and look not right sometimes, so pur-le is a popular middleground. And yeah it does never quite look 100% correct, it won’t using that technique but thats kinda the trade off for having a faster method.
The picture in my icon i used an awkward combination of using actual painting and shading with purple so it looks kinda weird. I think someone using watercolor can rely on the texture of it and the richness of the pigment to cover up a little more that it’s not totally accurate.

That's something I've tried a bit in the past, and I'm not a huge fan. One of the advantages of grey is that, while it doesn't look great anywhere, it works everywhere. With something like blue or purple, it can become very strange looking when shading certain colours or in certain lighting situations. As a quick catch-all I don't think it would work very well.
The washed-out look and gray-greens evoke memories of the animated Hobbit movie from 1977. That is a good thing.
This could be a powerful tool in your repertoire, if the situation calls for it. It doesn't really lend itself to happy/sexy stuff. Might I suguest trying this technique again, but with a somewhat more grimdark scope? (Dammit. Now I'm imagining GCF in a parody of "Where There's A Whip There's A Way"...)
