He does need a hat. ;-; He's supposed to have a cavallier hat (like in his reference pictures in the scraps), but I couldn't find one of good quality (i.e. not plastic) before the faire.

Thanks! In retrospect, I think it was almost too red. Or at least, I'm going to look into a darker red sash and maybe next time wear my sword belts as well, to help break up the red so the pieces of the costume are more distinct from each other.

There's nothing wrong with someone else doing an undead horse skull critter-- I certainly don't have the monopoly on them, there's enough floating around. XD I'd love to see more of them-- we could have a great group photo!

What was this made out of? I'm in the process of trying to make a Duke costume. I made a head out of duct tape, but it started to fall apart and I'm pondering starting over.

His head is made of paperclay over a wire mesh form, and then the 'fleshed out' bits are regular foam you can get from Jo-Anns and the like and yard-long sheets. The paperclay isn't the chunky, goopy 'mix with water' paste, though (that stuff is seriously impossible to use once it sets and heavy as lead). I got it at Michael's; it comes in a black plastic wrapper in a small brick, it's white and really feels exactly like clay while you're using it. Once it sets it's extremely light-- I recommend sealing it so it doesn't tear, since it's not exceptionally strong on its own, but it's not crumbly or brittle if you choose not to. :)
Old school papier-mache is also a method I considered, but then I found this stuff and I was like "pff fuck that noise, I'm too lazy for that shit."

Yeah I got the goopy mix with water stuff and used that, but it wouldn't adhere to the duct tape AND was indeed too heavy. So I got a couple things of paper clay and I shall try again! I might get some wire mesh for the base.

I used just a couple strips of plastic mesh for the basic, then bulked it up with duct tape, then tried from there. Didn't work so well but hey, we learn from our mistakes haha.
