Work from 2013 done as part of an art test which landed me my studio job right out of school. I don't think I was given any more specific of a prompt for this besides 'an environment painting'-- I had a handful of environments in my portfolio since I'd been focusing on them, but he probably wanted to see me turn one out fresh, so I (somehow) pulled this out in 2-3 days.
This was inspired by the look and feel of Macau. I was fortunate enough to get to do a 5-week summer program in Hong Kong through my school in 2012 and we'd done a day trip to Macau as part of that-- the architecture was a mixture of Portuguese and South Chinese, which made for some interesting combinations. Unfortunately, I didn't really showcase the coolest aspects in this particular illustration, since that would have involved painting a ton of mosaic tiles on the floor in perspective, which I opted out of doing due to the short turn around time.
The gossiping old ladies is absolutely my favorite part. I love drawing/painting old ladies and this is one of the few opportunities I've actually had to do them.
