I never fully understood it myself, but in every foreign language class I took back in middle/high school in the 90's, the teachers always assigned your class name. Either that or you were given a specific list of pre-selected names that you could use for your name. I think it was because not every name in English has a Spanish equivalent, so they didn't want anyone to feel left out?
I dunno. I just remember that between several years of Spanish classes, my names included Jose and Eduardo, amongst others, but never Juan (which seemed like the obvious choice).
