So yeah, this is a detail of that crown from my hoard. :3 Gold, with silver inlays patterning waves and the north wind. Rubies top the mounts of the crown, with an emerald on either side that lines up with the temples. Sapphires trickle like water droplets from the rubies, and a large one sits at the very front of the snout-plate as small diamonds blow along the silver winds.
As you can see, the crown is open in the back to accomidate a dragon's neck frill (especially important to green dragons like the one I won it from, as they have the second largest frills next to silvers), and a pair of golden extensions curl around the horns, holding the crown in place (important for most dragons, but it would make the crown unwearable for something like a blue dragon). I quickly sketched out a bit of my face beneath the actual crown so you can see how it fits onto a dragon's head, making sure the crown itself is in heavier lines. It was then scanned, and color added in photoshop.
Obviously, the real thing looks way better than my crappy drawing skills can express. The lines are straighter, the curves are smoother and better-defined, the gems are evenly cut and don't have edge lines so thick that they take up the entire jewel, etc. However the basic design is spot-on, and works perfectly with most dragon heads... Not that I'm concieted enough to walk around wearing it.
Though I must say... *cough*
...it does look DAMN good on me... >.=.>
