False Bird
This creature was recently discovered on an rain forest island that hadn't previously been known for any major predators. It seems to wear a bird skull and the pelt of its victims to try and blend in. Its diet consists mainly of bird and eggs raided from nests but it won't turn its nose up at any small meaty creatures who happen upon it. It does not seem to originate from the island and the native bird populations are suffering for it. Its own fur tends to be coarse and drab in comparison to the pelts it wears though, of the population observed, there are those who appear to slowly shift thier own colors to better match thier favored prey.
It is fairly lightweight weighing only 20lbs or so and being about the size of a small to medium dog. They generally have bird like ears though some are reported to grow tufts of course semi rigid fur around thier ears that can appear like ears.
They're fairly solitary in thier hunting habits but otherwise live in small family groupings in the lower branches of smaller trees. Their dens are littered with the bones of birds, discarded skulls and nests are made with the pelts of thier victims.
They're seen puzzle solving on level with some species of corvids and are considered fairly intelligent for thier brain size.
They are fickle in thier chosen partners sometimes making nests and laying eggs with multiple partners in the same season though this can lead to squabbles over rights to protectors and providers for thier own young. They have been documented to steal the eggs of others and either eat them or raise them as thier own if they've lost thier own young. Parental drive only lasts for a few weeks though and soon young are abandoned to fend for themselves for the most part which leads to a high mortality rate among young.
Little is known about thier hunting habits however.
Anything less than the first AB and I will create a species around these guys.
