Darkthorn Valley, with Darkthorn Palace in the background.
Darkthorn Valley is not a physical place, but rather, exists as plane deep within Mephistopheles' psyche. Darkthorn Palace lies within the deepest part of his soul. His true nature, soul and origin is locked away within the thorned palace.
It forms as the final location visited within the tale, after the battle with Death Mephistopheles, and the true final boss, Trauma, is fought within the depths of Darkthorn Palace.
Darkthorn Valley is an enormous, desolate land.
The land is surrounded by enormous black cliffs, making it hard if not impossible to see the horizon.
Black, dead trees decorate the landscape.
A quite wide pathway leading to Darkthorn Palace is supported over a what is assumed to be a bottomless void.
The true size of the geography is impossible to measure however, as the place is perpetually covered in dense layer of fog, obscuring the scenery.
A dark tendril also seen running throughout Mephistopheles' castle is also seen protruding from Darkthorn Palace, suggesting that the tendrils originate from somewhere within the palace
What could this place lying at the depths of Mephistopheles' soul conceal...?
Darkthorn Valley and Darkthorn Palace are named after Blackthorn City.
Their names are further derived from "dark", as Mephistopheles' nature is, as well lying at the deepest, darkest part of his soul.
The "thorn" comes from "having a thorned heart", which represents the evil or pain that caused said evil within Mephistopheles' heart come an external force, hidden away within Darkthorn Palace.
The black, thorn-like cliffs are inspired by the Pokémon episode Address Unown!, in which a dark thorn stuck inside a giant Larvitar egg represented Larvitar's trauma.
These thorns later materialize into tendrils, trapping Larvitar, representing his struggles, which was the inspiration behind the dark tendrils.
Darkthorn Palace's design is based on the appearance of a bamboo shoot.
I've added a little figure at the beginning of the path there to give you a sense of scale x3
