A phenomenon I've noticed amongst my people (read: nerds) that I truly don't understand is arguing tastes. For example:
Schmuck A: Meh, I really don't care for The Beatles.
Schmuck B: OH MY GOD ARE YOU RETARDED DON'T YOU KNOW THEY'RE ONE OF THE BEST SELLING BANDS OF ALL TIIIIME?!
It doesn't matter if we're talking sales statistics, box office profits, awards or even +watches... taste varies. Something is only as good as the person currently consuming it, and arguing something pop culturey that comes down to personal preference is an excercise in futility. Yet people will still do it anyway.
ETA: Ooh! Forgot to add! Often this comes from taking an insult to something you like as an insult against yourself. I'm sure there's a term for it but it's slipping my mind right now. We as geeks tend to identify ourselves by our various nerdly passions, and hence have a hard time separating a blow against something we enjoy and a blow against US.
Originally this was going to be some random dude but then I realized it was PERFECT for Kenta.

I was just going to comment on the lulz of the comic. XD Then I saw your avatar. And wow. If I remember right, nothing adult. And that is soooo close. XD Ice cream pop thing. XD And it's just so green. Well done animation there.
But back to the comic, lulz, and true. I can understand some minor arguments, but there's no accounting for tastes in some cases. ;p *nudge nudge*

...I clicked your avatar AND I DIDN'T WIN A PS2!

My friends were carefully picked for matching interests and went through an extensive screening process! (The process was being able to stand me for more than 5 minutes)
God I hate those people too.

I so very much wanna hear someone make a Jenova's Witness comment IRL, just so I can punch them in the face...
Which is funny, cause I myself am a fan of FF7, if only for the fact that it actually had a decent story... Though we need more Zidanes and Balthiers in the FF universe XD Less Clouds and Squalls.

Gurren Langan: "Hey how can we milk out our 80s animation nostalgia and and make the geek hordes happy?"
"ROBOTS!! BEWBS!! MAKE IT LIKE FLCL BUT LIKE IT WAS MADE IN THE 80S!! AND IT'S EPIC!!LOUD!!OBNOXIOUS!!CLICHE AFTER CLICHE!!"
Repeat process for 27 episodes in a seizure inducing, flat, sterile manner and every social shut in will gobble it up,and just because it's like to them Evangelion with a happier ending: INSTANT WIN!

My mom got me evangelion as a gift because it was ANIME and I guess for most anime fans it would be pretty on the mark but I found the main character to be a bitchy bitch man and apparently there is MOMMY PROBLEMS and SLEEP RAPE in later episodes
So
Uh
No.
I played princess maker 2 800 times in fact I may have to download it again

There was only one reason I ever found out about Gainax and that was "Aim for the Top! Gunbuster."
"Oh cool, it's got the character designer of Macross."
"Wow this isn't half bad." And then I saw "The Wings of Honneamise" which I think was probably their last really good 'film.'
Evangelion's just grown into a giant fanboy cancer at this point.

For some reason, a bunch of my friends were trying to get me to do this with a sort-of friend a few months back. I wasn't too interested in listing stuff for him to not like, so in the end, we only managed to establish that, while he liked Dune, I had put it down midway through because it felt like I'd hit the end.
Please, irony, do not get me tons of angry replies about the fact that I only read half of Dune.

I'm not like a bunch of girls. The thought of mainstreaming like that disgusts me because THAT is WRONG!
And such novelty items are why I am no longer affiliated with eBay
And I wanna set the record straight - I only "OMG, like, love" A very few things in this world...
a) Having friends, and making the poor bastards laugh
b) Licquor, and you better believe a LOT!
c) Music, and by that I mean music from the era when Michael Jackson (RIP Michael) was BLACK Goddammit!

Nerds can not resist doing this. xD Tho we've all probably been guilty of it.
I enjoy the ones that most that when they find out you don't like something they are in too IMMEDIATELY start trashing something you like just to be spiteful. SO YOU DON'T LIKE ______ OH YEAH WELL _______ IS SHITTY!

XD It's all subjective anyway, I'll never understand why people argue about things that they like or dislike. 'Ooh, I hate red, blue is so much better because it's what calm people like and only people with high hormones like red.'
...Wait, one of my art teachers back in college said that only simple people like fully saturated primaries, and if you've led an eventful life you like desaturated colors. Oops X3 Guess people do argue about it :3

sounds like the only slightly less old "Pokemon is BAD because lots of people buy their crap" argument.
It's vacuous and money minded and I'm a fan, so what?
Why do you care whether it's "good" or not, are you the character in the comic?
The one who can't let people enjoy the "wrong" things because they are "bad"?

The only time I get annoyed is when someone decides they don't like it without trying.
Like a dude I work with, said he doesn't like Terinto(sp?) films. I was like oh what did you see cause I hated Kill Bill, he said uhh.. I read online that they are wordy and pretentious and I don't like them.
:l
THEN YOU DON'T NOT LIKE HIM YOU'RE JUST LAZY

Hahaha. I love these people. They're very amusing.
I usually get such arguments when I tell people I'm not into Harry Potter, or Lord of the Rings. I've never been into fantasy of that sort. *shrug* BUT APPARENTLY I AM WRONG TO NOT ADORE IT AND LICK ITS FEET.
This is classic. ;D

If you've been around YouTube as much as I have, you'll definitely know about these sorts of arguments. Makes me want to hit something! xP
Although nevertheless, I still <3 Kenta very, very much so I don't mind his rangy natures! X3
Very nice, funny work and it's great to see this guy again! 83

I'm one of the people who walks into crowds of Techno fans and say there hasn't been a decent hit since Terra Naomi, and before her the early 90s...
I live dangerously, and love it!
But I agree people do it to me as well, and I tend to go off my rails worse than Kenta here LMAO

I'm curious about this
what if the explanation for someone not liking a thing reveals by itself a fucked up fact about the person?
For example, I usually don't care much for comic book movies, but I met someone who didn't like Watchmen because the movie was about armed conflict, and on her mind armed conflicts only affected just a few and anyone who'd watch movies would never relate to war. Since war didn't happen on her suburban streets there it wasn't a good movie and those who did were just either pessimisitc or being edgy in her mind and then she proceded to go on how war movies should be more Disney like.
Another example: someone saying that rap music was for rapists and welfare queens and portraying less relatable situations than powermetal.

WHAT
YOU DONT LIKE NERD RAGE?
WELL EXUUUUUUSE ME, MISTER, BUT I DIDN'T HEAR YOU RIGHT. I GOT SOMETHING ILLOGICAL IN MY EAR. ABOUT 100% ILLOGICAL TO BE EXACT. IT'S ABOUT ABOUT AS ILLOGICAL AS 3.5334 MILLION KILOGRAMS OF PANCAKES, THAT'S HOW MUCH. ALSO, I WAS DISTRACTED BY YOUR FACE

Guilty.
Of course, I go in EXPECTING people not to even know of the anime/manga I am referring to. And I mean in a "Never heard of it / Knew of it's existence" kind of way.
This is mostly because I keep track of what JAPAN likes and considers popular. Such as the following:
1. GeGeGe No Kitaro
2. YattaMan
3. Dokonjo Gaeru
4. Dokaben
5. Ashita no Joe
(One of these is a very personal favorite of
TonytheFish)
These are the anime/manga that Japan treasures in ways beyond words. Here are some examples of just how Japan reveres these series. Try and match the AMOUNT of Japanese fandom to the proper series:
A) Based off an old Japanese folk tale and is often referenced in various other series, INCLUDING BLACK JACK!
B) Series used as a reference when someone was making their own Baseball manga/anime.
C) Has bronze statues of the characters lining the street the series' creator grew up on. Often left offerings and treated as Shinto deities.
D) Had an actual funeral held in a stadium when they killed off one of the main characters.
E) Recently brought back series with parodies of Jack Bauer from 24, Barack Obama, Hilary Clinton, and John McCain thrown in the mix.
So when I rage, it's not so much against the people not liking them, it's more of a "WHY has no one outside of Japan ever even HEARD of these series! Come on Japan! Give us the goods!"
So, yeah. I see myself as the wandering priest trying to spread the word of God in Feudal Japan. (Futile, yet believes in what they are doing and often gains a small following) Only replace "God" with "Anime/Manga that barely anyone in North America has ever heard of".
But then again, that's why I am who I am. And that's...

This works the other way too though. All through high school I had to put up with:
Person: "What music do you like?"
Me: "I like all kinds of music."
Person: "But what type of music?"
Me: "Doesn't matter to me as long as it sounds good."
Person: "I mean what bands."
Me: "Ugh. Well I guess the last concert I went to was Metalli--"
Person: "Metallica sucks."
Why do people ask you your opinion when they really just want to tell you theirs?
