These two photos are within just a few hours of being taken a year apart.
30 AUG 2008 Saturday
In the very early hours of the morning, I hear a kitten mewing in the large community center parking lot across the street from where I work. I go to check it out and the fuzzball takes of running scared as soon as it sees me coming. I don't see or hear it for the rest of the night.
31 AUG 2008 Sunday
In the very early hours of the morning, I hear the same kitten. I find it hiding in the base of some kind of spruce tree that has branches down to the ground. It lets me get closer, close enough to that it's a beautiful marble coat orange tabby, but won't let me catch it.
1 SEP 2009 Monday (Labor Day)
I brought a small live catch trap with me to work. I wait until I hear the kitten and set the trap in the bushes nearby baited with a small can of gooshyfood. The kitten proved too light to set the trap off as some the food was eaten, but the trap was empty. I relocate the trap to another set of bushes. Later, when I go to check the trap, the kitten isn't in it, but is in a dense bush nearby where it wasn't able to get away before I grabbed it. I got clawed and bit, but I grabbed it.
I used the trap to keep it in the rest of the night (with food and water) and that's when the older of the two photos was taken. At first, the kitten would hiss at me when I came near it, but calmed down within a few hours, let me hold it and even purred, not because he was scared, but because he was relaxed and happy. When my relief got there at 7am, he wasn't afraid of her at all.
I took it to the vet the next morning (closed on Labor Day) and it was found to be in good health, a male and about 8 weeks old. I named him Marmalade because I'd thought for some time that if I ever got an orange marble coat kitty, that's what I'd name it. Now, a year later, he's still a healthy, loving kitty who sleeps on my bed next to me and follows me around the house and yard.
