They were the Emperor and Empress of the area Kuzuri lives in, but then Aki ends up dying due to the Volatic disease.
I wanted to draw them together a week before she dies, unaware that that's going to happen.
Katsu is very in love with his wife, and adores her, so losing her is losing a large part of himself.
