Went browsing through some old sketchbooks today. Y'know, I've never once filled a sketchbook. Some weird compulsion, I guess. I get to the last few pages and I buy a new one.
Anyway. I used to be really into robotic prosthetics/androids. And it occurred to me that I haven't drawn any in quite awhile.
I was listening to Slavonic Dance Opus 46 #7 by Dvorak the entire time I was drawing this. It made things seem more poignant than they likely are.

I actually find your choice of music while drawing this to be interesting. That song is a bit too...cheerful and playful, while this piece seems a bit sad, somehow. Makes for an interesting juxtaposition, though. Then again, the YouTube clip I found of this song was a rendition on a guitar quartet, which gave it a very relaxing tone, so that probably affected my overall interpretation.
The orchestral version is much better. Starts out playful, quickful becomes epic. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lTo2.....PL&index=7

I really need to buy a CD of his stuff. I'm ashamed to admit that I only know of the New World Symphony because of Ren and Stimpy, heh. And the only reason I've been listening to Slavonic Dance #7 all day is because I happened to catch it on NPR this morning. Dude made some EPIC music.
I know it has so much power and force behind it. Nah that's nothing to be ashamed of. Hell I got into music after watching the old Sonic SatAMs and listening to the music in it X3 There are some good sites that have some of his CDs discounted and usually the Library has a good collection of his work
I've always wondered why the heck real prosthetics are always made to look as much like a normal arm as possible. I mean, for one thing there's that little rule that states: The closer to looking lifelike something is without being perfect, the creepier it is...
And for another thing... the prosthetics designers are passing up such an opportunity to make something that looks either Artistic, or totally freakin' cyberpunk. Or both. :o
Actually, I do remember seeing one prosthetic arm design that was very artistic and in-human looking. Wish I knew where to find some pics. As for myself, if I ever lose an arm... AvP arcade game. Major Schaefer. 'Nuff said.

I suppose the point of a prosthetic limb is to replicate, as closely as possible, the function of the limb that was lost. To that end, building a prosthetic with brass tubes and rocket-powered tendons would be a lost cause.
But DAMN if it isn't cool, regardless!
