Bip and Shallie met at age five and became BFFs. Every year on the first day of summer, they would meet on the beach behind their houses, at 11 am, to welcome in the season of splashing and fun and lying in the sun.
In High School Shallie had to practically fight off all the boys who wanted her, while Bip never had a boy she liked like her back.
One drunken night they ended up hugging and then in bed together. Went back to being just friends, then became lovers for a few weeks, then just friends again, then lovers again, then just friends....and then parted in angry words just before graduation.
Fall, Winter, and Sping at home before going away to University – and still they didn’t speak.
And so the first day of summer came – the last summer before they would go away to different cities and Universities (their parernts were still friends, so Bip knew Shallie would be moving far away)...and at 10:50 am Bip makes her way through the forest to the beach. Will Shallie be there? Will they make up, be friends again, or fall into each other’s arms, or argue and say bitter words – never to see each other again?
So on a pleasant first day of summer Bip, who cried all a sleepless night, walks the path to the beach, her heart beating hard with hope and dread.
So....”The Path To The Beach” - these two pics are a couple of my personal faves. I didn’t know the story behind them back then (characters might eventually tell you who they are if you wait...). I think they were done back around ‘98 -’03 (???) (the scan of the first pic was from ‘07 but i think that was because i didn’t want to put them on line)...
i think they were among the first times that my various influences came together to make what is now “my main style” (i guess, whatever) and loved the inking, composition, etc on them.
Anyway...started to colour them a few years ago and then didn’t have time to finish them...and way too rough to post...had a couple hours free this afternoon where i wasn’t up to working finished pieces, so did a couple fixes on this first pic.

Might have a moment here or there to get Shallie pic somewhat less rough and presentable...

i don't actually know how they resolve it...but it won't be bad. They love each other, and Shallie has spent just as many sleepless nights regretting her angry words - as lovers or friends - they will miss each other during University years, and find time during breaks to get back together - so story has happy resolution.
It's strange how characters live in your thoughts, come and go, and years later might tell you their full story. It doesn't feel like you just made that up - that was who these character were when you first drew them, but you didn't know it, cuz they're sort of private and shy and still working through their situations.
i've heard a lot of writers talk about how their character come alive and change their stories into unexpected directions. Like the ancient Greeks thought how art came from the Muses, or the old Blues musicians would say "My Blues come from God". It seems to me a sort of Shamanistic engagement....Does that happen with you, your characters taking over and telling their own stories?
