I did this portrait of my beloved best friend in the whole world, Roman.
He came from a pretty bad life. Former bait dog. The shelter told me his fur would never grow back right in some places. Especially the bald nubs on his paws where he was tied....
But much of it grew back, so did his muscles through hikes and constant walks.
I took him everywhere as I was traveling up the east coast. He got my first bite of food and last. Every home I always strived to be the most suitable place for us, just for him.
Stoic, meditative, thoughtful, intuitive to a fault but sometimes? He was just a dumb ole dog pawing at my leg to go outside or stop being upset! Take me for a walk instead and lets sniff good things.
He developed a nasty cough this year. I got him whatever i could to make it better but it never left...it went to his heart eventually.
He passed away this week in my arms.
That night, after endless CPR his last breath when I lifted him to the car to get to an Emergency vet.
But he knew he was loved. His last hike under big beautiful blue skies, a warm sun, and his own whole ham sandwich he patiently waited for until we rested under a shade tree staring out at blue hazey mountains surrounding us.
He was every good part of me. Every part of me that wanted to live and succeed as a good person. He was my only idea of what real love could ever be. My sweetest boy. My old man. My gladiator.
I will miss you so damn much my big man. You walk in my every step.
Enjoy the trails up there <3
