Funny thing I found out about humans. When they get really nervous, they tend to talk a lot and make a lot of wise-cracks. Doesn't that just add to the anxiety and awkwardness of the situation?
You may also notice at this point that the dialogue and event sequence don't exactly match that of the original story. Why is that? Because I've already told that story there. This time I'm going to try a slightly different dialog and see if it changes the effect.

By nature, the threads retract similar to the power cord of a vacuum cleaner. It's a force similar in concept to gravity; the threads that Adomm pulls are a sort of core to the actual physical shell of the canvas.
At least, that's how I understand it, and when i relay it like that to her, she gives me a subtle nod.
Also, you are correct. Many a canvas had managed to escape from Adomm by fleeing, causing the threads to yank out of her hands and back into their host body unfinished and, in some cases, unstable. Even a full sprint is usually enough to get away. That is why she had to adapt to certain tactics, like changing as much as possible without risking discovery and quickly changing the legs to make the canvas stumble and fall to buy more time.
Like all things, it's an art. You practice, you make mistakes, you discover strategies and patterns, and you get better.
