I've never understood sentence diagrams...

They're not that hard to understand. I should draw an explainer someday.

Basically, the core of a sentence diagram is a long horizontal line crossed by a short vertical one.
The main noun of the subject (WHO or WHAT is doing the thing) goes on the left half of the line.
The main verb of the predicate (What the subject is DOING) goes on the right half.
Modifiers such as adjectives and adverbs hang down from the words they modify on diagonal lines.

You're just not used to it.

If there's a direct object, it goes to the right of the verb separated by the top half of a vertical crossing line.

(x) is a stand-in for absent words, such as the subject of an imperative sentence (a direct order), which is an implied "you".

Alternatively, of course, you can supply the missing words, as long as you use parentheses to show that they're not actually in the original sentence. Sub-units of the sentence, such as prepositional phrases, additional clauses, and the additional verb phrases of compound sentences, are diagrammed as separate sentences, tied back by a line to the point at which they split from the core of the sentence.

Of course, KT and I are showing our age, here -- this is the Reed-Kellogg method. The modern method uses parse trees. Here's a link to the Wikipedia article.

Reed-Kellogg diagrams are more fun to make than parse trees! (Probably harder, though.)

Two mistakes here. "My" modifies "ass" and "off" modifies "laughing". They're both hanging from the wrong words! Minus 2 points.
