Making a story, if you start taking the logical approach to some story aspects, it's hard to tell the line where you should stop reasoning. Here the matter is time of occurrence. I know art doesn't have to make sense but still I feel a lot content with hybrid species in my story than Jack Russel Terriers in spaaaace :D
