Why are they there? The markings represent a style of armor Moon Shadow once wore while serving under Princess Luna.

Cutie Mark: A black crescent moon with yellow outline over three black tear drops also with a yellow outline.

Bio: Even when Moon Shadow was a young colt, he always enjoyed the night. As the Sun would set Moon Shadow would eagerly watch the Moon Rise. When the Moon shone in its full glory Moon Shadow would go outside and frolic and dance in the moon beams. It didn’t take long for Moon Shadow to get his cutie mark, a yellow crescent moon with three yellow stars. Moon Shadow knew he was destined for something great. Then the day came when Princess Luna turned against her sister Princess Celestia. Moon Shadow was watching the Moon rise yet there was a difference, it didn’t glow as brightly. When he heard that Princess Luna wanted to make it night all the time, he was excited. Moon Shadow set forth to find Princess Luna, after a few months Moon Shadow found Princess Luna and saw she had changed from the Majestic Princess Luna to the Dark and Powerful NightMare. Moon Shadow was in awe of her as he bowed before her (willingly) and devoted himself to her. NightMare was amused by Moon Shadows loyalty yet was able to sense a great potential in him. Moon Shadow grew and became a fine Unicorn Stallion always at the ready to protect and serve NightMare. Then one day Princess Celestia approached NightMare, Moon Shadow was on his guard yet NightMare told him to stay back. After a short battle, Princess Celestia came out on top and imprisoned NightMare in the Moon. Princess Celestia approached Moon Shadow and said, “I admire your loyalty yet blinded by your own desire for the night you followed my sister in her pursuit of revenge.” Princess Celestia’s horn shone so brightly that Moon Shadow looked away and closed his eyes. When he opened them he noticed he was no longer a Stallion yet a Pony again. Moon Shadow looked to his cutie mark and saw it had changed. Now the Moon was black with a yellow outline and the stars were now black tears also with yellow outlines. He looked to Princess Celestia, who now towered over him, and in a voice of a Pony said ‘What did you…’ when Moon Shadow noticed his voice changed he quickly covered his mouth only to notice the armor he once wore was now just a mark on his skin. Then Princess Celestia spoke, “Do not look at this as a punishment, you have been given a second chance. A chance to find out who you are without the dark intentions of others looming over you. The markings are the reminder of your bondage to my Sister. You no longer wear those bonds and so now you are free.” Princess Celestia looked at Moon Shadow, “Ah, I see your cutie mark has changed, that is a first. Hmm, the Moon is still there but the color has changed and the stars have been replaced. This is also proof of your second chance.” After she was done speaking, a blueish light surrounded Princess Celestia covering her, when the light faded Princess Celestia was gone. Now a Pony, Moon Shadow leaves what was once NightMares “palace” and ventures out, after sometime he comes across Ponyville. When he saw all the Ponies he could feel something inside, Moon Shadow didn’t know exactly what the feeling was all he knew is that he hoped he would be able to make friends with Ponies of Ponyville.
