This is another illustration from my upcoming novel "Wolf Boy" written by me and illustrated by Russell Tuller. Nylca's father tracks down his daughter and is not taking no for an answer.
Story Excerpt:
“But Nylca, look at yourself. You're not even...human anymore. You're something else now. Still...I'm not leaving here without you. I came all this way trying to find you, and I'm not leaving you behind. You can't honestly tell me that you're happy about all of this, can you? You'd rather be here in the woods than home?”
My father's words tapped at a deep crack in my resolve, knowing that I had left so much behind to live the life that I was living now. However, nothing could compromise everything I had gained in the process, and I was willing to fight in defense of those joys and gifts which I would not have back home.
“Dad, I'm happy here. And I'm ok with what's happening to me. If turning into a wolf is what it costs for me to feel fulfilled in life, then I am willing to pay that price without hesitation.”
My dad was growing increasingly agitated and closed the gap between us with his hands clenching tightly into strained fists. Beneath his visible frustration, I could sense a mounting desperation. I had never put up this much of a fight to him before and he was uncertain what to do now.
“Think about what you're doing to your mother and me by doing this right now.”
Guilt was not going to work with me anymore. I had grown too tired of his worn, manipulative tricks.
“Mom understood my decision, and she was ok with my changes. You left us. You weren't there. You're the one who...”
And before I could finish my sentence, I felt the sting of his heavy hand slapping me hard across the side of my face.
“Don't you dare compare me to your moth...”
From the thicket behind me came a menacing, thunderous snarl, and in a blur of motion, Starlight appeared racing towards us in long, leaping bounds. He stopped at my side with his large, barreled chest heaving with rage. Starlight's hackles were raised all across his body, and his tail was raised stiff and rigid behind him. His ears were pressed forward, and his nose was wrinked with his lips curled back to reveal his pointed teeth and formidable canines. The muscles of his legs were tensed, ready to leap forward, and most concerning was his golden, twin-sun eyes burning hot with uninhibited fury. His instincts were in full force to defend me, and I knew that he would do so by whatever means necessary.
“Mahy Meyt! Yoo gro nurow!! Yoo wrehl knurough mahy bahyte ohnlee wuhns!”
Starlight's words were lost between heavy growls and snarls which communicated his thoughts and feelings much more simply and effectively than words. Words were a burden to him in these moments. My dad stared directly at Starlight, meeting the ferocity of his gaze with his own and not moving at all except for his one hand slowly creeping down his side to where he kept a large, sheathed knife attached to his belt. When my father spoke, it was in a soft, breathy voice.
“Your mother did say you weren't alone. So this must be who's been causing you to change. Step aside Nylca. I'm going to free you from your delusion.”
In a deft motion, he drew his knife free of its sheath, the silver, polished blade gleaming as it caught flecks of sunlight from above. Starlight gripped his paws tightly into the ground beneath him and let loose another resounding snarl. Within my chest, my heart pounded and my thoughts blanked until all I could feel was a need to protect him from anything which would dare cause him harm. He was the keeper of my heart now, and my happiness and joy had become immeasureably entangled in his well-being.
I choose Starlight.
I stepped forward so that my body was shielding Starlight's and stared hard at my dad with unflinching eyes. His grip on the knife was strong, but there wasn't any fear within me in this moment. My purpose was clear. My choice had been made.
“Nylca, move! Stop this nonsense and wake up. You're a human, not a wolf like him.”
My ears pressed forward and my clawed, padded toes dug deeply into the earth beneath me. My tail rose up stiffly behind me, and the hackles along the back of my neck and back stood on end. My nose wrinkled and my lip curled back revealing my teeth. Then I filled my lungs to their fullest with air and growled low and deep in the back of my throat before loosing a roaring snarl that rang out for miles around.
“I am a wolf!!!”
