Joey must have been doing a lot of sunning to become deeply tanned, unless he's been cheating with fake tan though that could be easy enough to tell. You'd just need to rub his paws enough to get him deeply relaxed and then just ask if he'd mind if you had a feel of the biceps. I think the tan is real though, considering the amount of hard work Joey would put into maintaining his physique he'd have a lot of relaxation to catch up on and time to tan.
If he's caught you staring at his paws I suppose you could always pretend you were surprised to see him without his hat if you wanted to play it cool, or going meta that it's interesting to see another artists take on him and the excellent quality of the artwork.
