Rory Illustration by Russell Tuller - "Outlook"
The summer sun was out in full force today, making the distant fields and forest shimmer as if they were nothing more than a desert mirage. Sweat beaded down the back of my neck and down my forehead as I carried the empty water bucket back with me. The chickens would be content for a good while now. Would be nice if they could get their own water for a change though. Squinting my eyes up to the blue sky above dotted with wispy puffs of clouds I estimated I had about half an hour left to myself before mom would start hollering for us to get ready for lunch.
I hung up the bucket on a nearby fence post, and quickly unlaced and set aside my boots, flexing my feet in the lengthening summer grass nourished by the storms we had pass through here just last week. It felt good to not have my feet all bunched up, especially on a day like this. My boots weren't the most comfortable by any stretch of the imagination, but at least they accommodated my changes well.
I looked ahead to where a sparrow was surveying its surroundings from the top of a distant post. That would be my target. I squared my shoulders and settled myself down into a crouch, the sun searing at my back in my stillness. When the bird finally flew away, I took off as well with all my might. Running was something I could do that was just for me to forget about everything else for a little while. I urged my body faster as I snorted out a large puff of heated air from my lungs. Faster and faster still I went, the balance of each footfall changing to center on my altered digit once I had gotten into a full sprint. Each step felt sturdy, strong, and certain. When I was finally done, I was bent over in heaving breaths, but laughing in between.
I decided to lay down in the cool grass beneath the shade of a nearby tree. Then time slowed. I listened to the birds around me and the drone of summer cicadas far away. A breeze cooled the sheen of sweat that had formed at my back from my exertion. With everything that had changed in my life since I came back down from the mountain, I was glad to at least still have this simple joy. I didn't even realize I had fallen asleep until I was startled awake by my mother's booming voice.
“Rory!!!! Hope everything's all done. Remember we don't cut corners here. I don't have time for any slacking, boy! Now, get your tail over here! It's time for lunch!”
At least I had a little time away from it all.
