Seeing some other artists experimenting with 3d work around here, I decided to create a 3D model of Hyst for posing and reference purposes. I think it worked out pretty great! It's hard to appreciate how awesome it is to turn around and move something in real-time after spending a long time doodling and trying to visualize something while drawing. Making interesting poses is way easier this way too! Although it does take a little bit of getting used to to set up the model to move and not breaking everything.
This was super fun! A ton of work though. If you guys have any ideas for other poses you might want to see, let me know and I'll see if it's possible to do without breaking something, hahaha.
Be sure to download the full size to see more of the detail!

Ahhh, I had Maya for a bit through a student license, but I think it expired. I've been poking at Blender a little bit, but I dunno, maybe I don't have a good tutorial, but I'm still struggling at the beginning with "make something other than a ball". I might just need to re-do the UI tutorial stuff I was going through so I understand more what everything does. But if you have any good resources for, like, an absolute beginner, I will happily take them...!
3d work in programs like maya is a whole separate art form that is a bit more technical. If you want to just get in there and get "dirty" making stuff I would definitely recommend a digital sculpting program rather than a modelling program. Sculptris I believe is a good free one you could mess with. You don't have to worry about the actual science behind 3d, just mold it all like clay. I can take a look for some tutorials and get back to you on that~
Rigging and a bit of animating is my... End goal? I guess? I was told it'd be a good skillset for me to start working on in my free time. But perhaps I should sculpt first, and then worry about rigging and stuff later...? Hmm.
Anyways! Yes! I would not turn down anything you have to offer. For real, I still love these. There's a lot of life in these models and I have a ton of respect for it~
