There was an Ercoupe in the hangar at my local airport for several months...it seems the owner/pilot was coming in to take a checkride in it for CFI-Sport Pilot, and on downwind, he had a catastrophic crank failure and the prop departed the aircraft. He landed without any problems...but the checkride was, needless to say, cancelled.
The prop was never found.

Never saw an Ercoupe in CAP livery. Beavers, Otters, Bird Dogs, T-34s, L-17 Navions, Cessna 172s and 182s, Maules, and Gippsland Travelairs. Pilot/aircraft owners could place a CAP decal on the vertical stabilizer at one time. A milsurp NA T-6 Texan appeared in a PSA television spot back in 1960 IIRC. Low-wing planes make poor SAR aircraft, but one takes what one gets.
Well, my dad used his Ercoupe for CAP duties, but kept it in its civilian livery.

Found a happy snap of my dad's old coupe, still in its civvy colors from the late 70s:

Apparently hasn't moved in awhile.
