"The name was originally just called "The Affliction." It was something that cropped up randomly around Kavella wherever attacks from Abyssal entities called Choris showed up. Victims would sustain a wound from the Choris and their corrupted black blood would enter the victim's body. There were purging methods that were effective at first, holy fire, exorcisms, or even flagellation. Without these seemingly primitive methods they all would have been lost within an hour, bodies reduced to piles of ash as the affliction spread."
"Then there was discovered to be more...adverse effects. The Affliction was never intended to kill it's victim, but corrupt them, transform them into monsters reborn of the Abyss. That is where the name Chimera came into place, people subjected to the actual stages of the infection ceased sharing similar properties past stage one, so testing later stages of actual Chimera became all the more important to us. The sigil embedded within their flesh often times depicted odd pentacles and other strange signs who's meanings could not be understood, the material itself was deemed to be of biological origins despite its mettalic appearance. We were not permitted to test the effects of tampering with the sigil given how irritable it made what few test subjects we had to us." - Division Head of Demonolgy
