I read the book, and I still enjoy this movie.
Yeah, some details are not as the book, but the same thing happened to Hunchback of Notre Dame; what changes were made were meant to make a new interpretation of what’s been written.
Plus, with the absence of the father, you would have a unique form of conflict, particularly towards young people with single parents. If you don’t believe me, watch Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory with the knowledge that Charlie’s dad was alive in the original book.
I do give credit to the book for one detail that’s really clever; the note Billy Bones gets before he dies. Apparently Robert Louis Stevenson researched a lot of pirate lore to find that specific code for his story.

If Treasure Planet was supposed to be a "faithful adaptation" of Treasure Island, it wouldn't have been in a steampunk/sci-fi setting with aliens. Instead, it was moreso just inspired by the story of Treasure island. It strived to be its own thing, and honestly, it did a great job of that, while also being heavily entertaining (the only hard negative I can think of really is that annoying robot character). It didn't bomb at box office because the quality of the movie, it bombed because of the fact that its release coincided with Lilo & Stitch; Disney knowingly shipped TP out without a care in the world whether it would succeed or die. It was a solid movie, but its box office competition left it going straight to home video. It's important to note that, before Pirates of the Carribean, pirate-themed movies weren't generally considered a very marketable movie genre. And on top of that, it was at a time when Disney's 2D studio was about to get downsized, so they'd rather just recoup their losses instead.
This video explains it all pretty well:

Because I like the image and praised the artist, tho the movie and theme itself was of no attraction to me. That makes the image even better. If everyone would just stick to his topics and never give critics or negative comments to all the endless amounts of weird stuff around in this world, it would be an even MORE weird place.
