Well known for being the only metal to be a liquid at standard temperature and pressure, mercury has captivated the imagination since ancient times. In alchemy it was considered to be one of the three basic substances alongside sulfur and salt, and also one of the planetary metals. Unfortunately, mercury is also highly toxic and caused many health problems for people who worked with it. Perhaps the most famous case is the use of mercury compounds to make felt hats; the symptoms of mercury poisoning led to the phrase “mad as a hatter.” In more modern times mercury has found use in tooth fillings, thermometers, and a a form of memory in early computers, but in many fields it is now being phased out for safer materials.
