More portfolio work from 2014 when I was spending every night after my studio job staying up late to crunch out new portfolio pieces. I'm not proud of this piece-- I can be proud of the effort I put into it but I don't think it's successful. So, I include it here because from the perspective I stand at now as an artist (and art educator), I think there's a lot of value in showing failure.
This was me working hard but heading in the wrong direction in a few levels. I was still pursuing concept art at the time, and I'm glad I had the strength to work so hard at this. But I was doing character work despite not loving character work or being skilled at it-- I was still falling victim to trying to create a portfolio so broad as to appeal to whatever studio was desperate enough to take me, and thus appealing to none of them.
I'm not sure when it was exactly that I completely abandoned pursuing the game development industry, but it was probably a couple of months after that year's GDC, which was the last one I ever attended. Come fall I would find myself at Illuxcon and realizing that changing my course was the best decision I could possibly make.
