The female died for the male and become a soul inside his necklace. Because they can share one body through magic, that's why they look so similar.
Here's the story goes.
The female dragon found an orphan dragon egg and decided to hatch and raise it. Day after day, the little male hatchling grew bigger. The female dragon found herself had carried a torch for the male,. And yet, when the she learnt that the male had already fallen in love with another male dragon, all she could do is to stay with the male and accompany protect him. The thing is, the male dragon is the reincarnation of the Bright Dragon while the other male that he loved was the Dark dragon, they were not meant to be together and their love was forbidden by the rules, however the male decided to fight against the destiny, his action only made him punished by God thunders and dying. At this very moment, the female sacrificed herself to save the male, then the soul of the female merged with the male and they became a soul inside the male's necklace.
This is a story in the novel. I may not describe it very well. Don't worry too much ^ ^
