it’s my other favorite canon redwall character! if he offers to babysit your kids and/or take them on a road trip I would not do it, but that is just me
the great thing about Slagar being voiced by Tim Curry in the cartoon, I mean just aside from the fact that it really happened, is that you can easily swap in the dialogue from any other character voiced by Tim Curry, which is a roundabout way of saying that I had ‘Toxic Love’ stuck in my head most of the time I was coloring this.
the hood is kind of meh but it's way more fun to draw gross scars anyway. wanted to make it slightly plague doctorish, to reflect the fact that he started out as a healer's son, and also because a bird mask is obviously the best choice for a half mangled face, given my taste in films.

Gosh I love this character
He was honestly a perfect villain; twisted and evil to the point of being abhorrent, but also very very likely having his negative traits amplified due to illness — his death being so anticlimatic just kind of summed up how awful his life ended up turning out.
No glory for child-stealing slavers...

I think Mattimeo is the best book overall (like, if you're only gonna read one redwall book, make it that one) and Slagar's complexity as a villain is a large part of why. Generic warlords are a dime a dozen in mossflower but Slagar really just wanted to troll the shit out of Matthias and whether he was justified in wanting revenge or not, it makes him way more sympathetic.
His visual design also owns and the description of his unmasking is so, so good that I have literally thrust the book into a dude's hands and said "here, just read this page"

You're welcome, and you should be! :)
Heh heh, though whenever I see Slagar unmasked, I still can't help but think back to a scene from an old fanfic of mine where Slagar takes off his mask, and then stands REAL CLOSE to Mokkan, who's back up against a wall. XD Poor old Mokkan, how I love to torture thee...
