OH BOY JURASSIC WORLD 2 COMES OUT THIS MONTH, LET'S CELEBRATE WITH SOME GOOD OLD FASHIONED SCIENCE-SHUNNING """DINOSAURS"""
Remember kids, accuracy sucks and nature isn't cool unless it roars
Who needs research when you can have HOLLYWOOD
Aywas RCC for the month of June. I cackled to myself the whole way through drawing this. Aros (#4353) actually one-upped me by editing it back into a JP-style "raptor" seen [here] hahaha!
Decided to try switching up the format from how I usually display these.

I wholeheartedly agree - despite the known inaccuracies, JP contributed a lot to the general public's perception of dinosaurs as active, intelligent animals versus slow, cold-blooded lizards. It also generated a lot of interest (and funding!) to the paleosciences.
I cannot say the same for JW though. We've learned a lot about dinosaurs since the 1990's, and this reboot is just a CGI-infested, nostalgia-driven, cash-grab full of [anatomical monstrosities] of which "genetically altered" cannot even begin to cover.
When JW - being the prominent franchise that it is - becomes the only representation of these creatures that a majority of the general public ever sees, they get a hugely false idea of what these creatures were and about the paleosciences focused on them. I think it is appropriate to hold them to higher standards.

Of course! I dont hold them on a pedestal above judgement, I can only grant them admiration for introducing us to the world of dinosaurs. JW gets a bit of leniency since it has to follow in JP's footsteps when it comes to visuals, as unfortunate as that is.
I do still hope they'll break out of their shell to bring us more accurate depictions, or another franchise will rise up to do it for them? Science has shown us that dinosaurs arent all screams and terror, instead more like modern birds who live as they need to... but then again theres modern animals that get a JW treatment like sharks, crocs, etc :/
..I will admit I love the I-Rex and I-raptor (probable spoiler if nobody knows of the trailers or movie??) designs as an in universe piece

I mean, I suppose it did have to follow in JP's footsteps, but with JW basically rebooting the whole series and starting the park & dino theme over, we had a GREAT opportunity for at least VAGUELY updated dinosaur visuals. Instead JW hit hard in reverse, with some of their dinosaur models honestly being worse than those you see in JP2 from 1997! They regressed on their own series for crying out loud lmao
See, no one is complaining about inaccurate representation of crocs in movies because there is a plethora of popular information about real crocs with most people even having seen real ones for themselves. The general public has had enough exposure to real, living crocodiles that if they saw an altered monster croc on screen, they would know it was an altered monster croc without having to research what a crocodile is.
That is not true for dinosaurs, but the general public wouldn't inherently know that, because they do not have a natural catalog in their brain for what a "real" dinosaur is like they do for crocs. No matter how many times Dr. Wu says their animals are "altered", the public still is not going to know the full extent to which they are being visually mislead.
Sure, people do have the option of researching dinosaurs for themselves, but without any conflicting pop-culture examples of accurate dinosaurs to challenge the JW image, no one is going to know their perceptions are off in the first place.
Honestly, JW can make dino-inspired monsters all it wants, just stop referring to, marketing, and selling the creatures under real scientific dinosaur species names to the point of confusing the general public into conflating the two.
Who wants to crowdfund me a couple million to make an accurate dino thriller!

5,000 tier to have my raptors featured and I'm in lmao (they are completely feathered, and as accurate as I can manage due to not having drawn them much and still getting comfy with dino anatomy).
I guess what I was going for with the shark and croc example was moreso relating to the behaviours most horror movies give to them, similar to how JW just cranks up the spook factor and makes their dinosaurs killing machines with no other real purpose? Remember Jaws and Lake Placid, they're very similar examples on size exaggeration and aggressive behaviour. If film makers want to wow and/or scare an audience they just make it bigger and have it kill things- see the Velociraptors in JP/JW
If documentary type films got a big audience theres a HUGE variety of those that show their animals as feathered and the beauty of them is they change to keep up with modern science and discoveries. You make a great point that people do have the option to seek out research of their own, and if they like visual learning they can hopefully turn to real sauce material

To be fair, they explain in Jurassic World that what theyve created are barely dinosaurs any more due to how horrifically hybridised they are.
Theyre monsters, not dinosaurs. Theyre designed to look as scary and brutal as possible and its completely intentional according to the law.

The main problem is that saying the JW creatures are "genetically altered" does not actually address many of the things wrong with them. Many people falsely believe that the only arguing point is feathers vs. no feathres, but feathers are one of the least of the worries. JW "dinosaurs" are:
- Emaciated to the point of being able to see their skeletons
- Severely lacking in proper musculature, especially in the jaw areas
- Their bone structures wouldn't be able to move in certain ways (such as the pronated hands, over-extension of the thigh bones, and hyper flexibility of the tails),
- Their teeth are so loosely rooted in their skulls they should fall out the moment the animal closes its mouth, and they completely lack lips
- And let's not forget their skull anatomy being so bad that they realistically wouldn't even [have a braincase]
These creatures are so badly constructed that they simply shouldn't function at a biological level, and throwing some frog DNA and the words "genetically altered" at them does not mean biology suddenly works any way you want it to. Claiming they are "monsters" and "not really dinosaurs anyway" ignores the fact that the entire franchise is built on the selling point of being about dinosaurs, calling them dinosaurs, and labeling their inaccurate creatures with the scientific names of dinosaur species.

You can really see how damaging the results are when trying to find an accurate representation of a dinosaur and only getting JW-style monsters with attributes that have been disproven and outdated since the 1960's.

Oh no, I can totally agree with that! Take the velociraptor for instance, a creature that was like, 2 feet tall in reality.
In the movies the "velociraptors" are more like the size of Utahraptor. I actually will go up to people and ask them "Tell me what you believe a velociraptor looks like"
Wanna know what they tell me? I bet you could already guess...
Humongous and ferocious.
I tell them that is wrong, obviously. I try my best to educate me, and then they look at me like I'm some kinda smartass. Well gee, I'm sorry I'm trying to save humanity from stupidity. Like come on, at least get your dinosaurs correct, it's simple shit.
And don't get me wrong, I will always be awed by how they make their movies with the animatronic dinosaurs and all, I also grew up on Jurassic Park, but as a kid I always knew my dinosaurs, and I liked them the way they are in real life. You can enjoy a movie, don't get me wrong, but mistaking monsters for dinosaurs is totally different.

scientific accuracy is certainly cool, but (I do not defend the film, just express my point of view) the model of the late 80s - early 90s became ... well, familiar? personally, I just can not imagine Blue (because of which I went to watch the fifth film) as something that looks like a big magpie.
