Rats are my favorite for that exact reason, I like something that enjoys my attention, and I only got nipped once, and it's because I forgot to wash my hands after I ate so I smelled food-y (their bad eyes thought I had food in my hands). But mice are a close second, I think mice are just wonderful. My only experience with gerbils was a bad one. :[
