Collects Catwoman Vol. 2 #1-13 by Jo Duffy and Chuck Dixon (writers) and Jim Balent (pencils).
The first four issues in this collection are and unofficial tie-in to the Knightfall storyline that was taking place in the other Batman-related books. Catwoman is working for Bane now, but is getting fed up with Bane sending his cronies to check up on her all the time. Bane knows that Catwoman can't be trusted, especially as her true identity is still a mystery to him.
Jim Balent's talent for fanservice doesn't disappoint as we see that Catwoman end sup with some strategic clothing damage after a hitman blows up her apartment. Right in the middle of her cleavage! I shouldn't be surprised as I sort of expected this sort of thing going in. I just didn't expect the art to get so fanservicey so quickly. Then again, this is Catwoman we're talking about. She never looks anything less than sexy.
Catwoman follows the hitman's trail to Santa Prisca. She stows away on a convenient Wayncorp jet, so I would be interested what Bruce Wayne was doing on board. Bruce would have still been recovering from the injuries he suffered at Bane's hands and there is a big gap in my knowledge between him stepping down as Batman and his replacement Jean-Paul Valley going nuts. The third volume of the Knightfall storyline doesn't have all of the Knightquest issues, so maybe we find out what Bruce is doing in Santa Prisca there.
In the next issue, Catwoman is out to get a gang who commit hate crimes against church-goers and the religious. I agree with Catwoman that while religion might not be for me, everybody should be able to worship (or not) in their own way without living in fear. For somebody that is supposed to be a villain, Catwoman sure seems to be working on the side of the heroes. Then again, she has never been like any of Batman's other rogues. Catwoman often takes it upon herself to look after the downtrodden people of Gotham that the other heroes might overlook. It's nice to see that she isn't just a one-dimensional villain. Selina Kyle actually has some depth to her.
The next two issues tie-in to the Knightquest stroyline running through the rest of the Batman-related books. An environmental group shows Catwoman footage of animals that have been killed by a new neurotoxin. Property developers are planning to use the neurotoxin to dispose of any endangered species so they can build on the land on which they once lived. Catwoman encounters the new Batman and ends up getting blamed for selling the neurotoxin to terrorists. I always had a soft spot for Jean-Paul Valley's time as Batman. He is just looks so 90's and EXTREME!! Just look at all the needless spikes and armour. His appearance is so over-the-top and I love it!
In the next two issues, Catwoman has to contend with a new villain and her gang of child thieves. Catwoman doesn't take it kindly when the gang's poorly executed capers get pinned on her. I would like to think that the Gotham police would give Seline a little more credit than that.
In the remaining issues of this collection, Catwoman takes up with a circus and helps save lives during an accident on a poorly-maintained bridge. One of her friends falls from the bridge and ends up paralysed. There is a device that could help the boy walk again, but Catwoman's search for the device will cause her path to cross with that of a returning Bruce Wayne as he tries to reclaim the mantle of the bat from Jean-Paul Valley.
A fairly enjoyable collection if you can get past all the fanservice. Maybe I will start reading Catwoman more regularly. The art can't all be needlessly sexy, right?
My rating: 3.5 stars.
