Collecting Star Wars: Chewbacca 1-5 by Gerry Duggan (writer) and Phil Noto (artist).
After the Battle of Yavin, Chewbacca finds himself on his own when he crash lands on a planet occupied by the Imperials. Stranded, Chewie is caught between finding a way off the planet and helping a feisty young girl in need.
Would it be any surprise that Chewbacca ended up helping the little girl Zarro instead of getting off the planet as soon as he could? Han Solo would have got off the planet right away, but Chewie would have probably nagged him until they went back to do the right thing. I imagine that's what made Han go back to help Luke out during the attack on the Death Star, and would you argue with a giant bear creature with a penchant for ripping off arms?
Zarro and her father have been forced into slavery because her father owes money to a gangster. It's clear that Chewbacca's history that he has no love of slavers either. Han Solo was kicked out of the Imperial Navy for saving Chewie. I haven't seen the Han Solo movie, so I'm only going by what I learned from the Expanded Universe.
I always assumed that Han Solo's claims that Wookies are well-known for ripping of somebody's arms when angry was just him trolling C-3PO, but we actually get to see him rip off some poor sap's arms. It's all in silhouette, but you can definitely tell what's going on. I think it's nice that the writer made the joke canon now.
I really enjoyed Duggan's writing on Deadpool and Noto's artwork is always beautiful, so I'm glad that their work on a mini-series starring one of my favourite Star Wars characters worked out to be good as well.
My rating: 3.5 stars.
