Circus elephant Mrs. Jumbo receives a baby from the stork, a baby with unusually big ears. The other elephants and the people working at the circus all make fun of the poor elephant and start calling him Dumbo. This angers Mrs. Jumbo, who tries to hide her son from the ridicule. When some of the children coming to see the circus start abusing Dumbo, Mrs' Jumbo lashes out in anger and ends up in solitary confinement. A mouse named Timothy becomes Dumbo's only friend and tries to get Dumbo to become a big star. Unfortunately, Dumbo trips over his oversized ears and messes up his big moment, ending up being cast as a clown instead. When Timothy and Dumbo accidentally get drunk, they wake up in a tree and surmise that Dumbo must have used his ears to fly. Timothy and Dumbo then decide to use this new skill to finally make Dumbo a big star.
It would be easy to say that I chose to review this movie because of the teaser trailer for new live action version of Dumbo was released a couple of days ago. As much as I would like to play the topical card, this movie has been on my watch list for a while. Yes, I have a big list of all the movies I plan to watch for these reviews. Any way, I'm not here to talk about how much I dislike the teaser trailer. I'm here to talk about the classic animated movie.
You have to feel sorry for poor Mrs. Jumbo. It seems like the storks are delivering babies to everybody but her and when Mrs. Jumbo finally gets her baby everybody makes fun of the poor thing just because of its unusual ears. You can understand why she goes on a rampage after those rotten kids start abusing Dumbo. That one kid definitely deserved that spanking. At least it works out for Mrs. Jumbo in the end. Her son is famous and she gets her own private train carriage.
I have always liked this movie, but the gang of crows still make me cringe. They really are unfortunate racial stereotypes. That being said, apart from Timothy the mouse, they are the only characters that are actually nice to Dumbo. They get one of the catchiest movies in the whole movie as well.
Pink Elephants on Parade still creeps me out to this day. I have to wonder what possessed the animators to create something like that. We get this terrifying drunken nightmare and then it isn't referred to again. It's probably the most famous part of the whole movie, so maybe the animators did their jobs in making something like that stick in our minds. The rest of the movie's songs are pretty memorable as well. If Baby Mine doesn't give you the feels, then you are dead inside.
My rating: 3.5 stars.
