Wanted to draw a wendigo, somehow it turned into a wendigo/bird hybrid, and then uhh...80's color choices got thrown into the mix.

well, that part's near the beginning. Wendy showed up to Neverneverland before Peter did, so the Lost Boys mistook her for a bird and shot her down. they thought she was a "wendy bird", and Peter almost killed the one who shot her until she woke up and it was revealed that the arrow only hit her button.
