Collecting DC Comics Bombshells #1-6 by Marguerite Bennet (writer) and Marguerite Sauvage, Laura Braga, Stephen Mooney, Ted Naifeh, Garry Brown, Bilquis Evely, Mirka Andolfo, Ming Doyle, Sandy Jarrell, Maria-Laura Sanapo and Marc Deering (artists).
It's the 1940's and the world's superheroes are all women fighting for freedom and justice in World War II. Kate Kane is the Batwoman, a player in an all-women's baseball league who lives a double life fighting crime. Kate is approached by Amanda Waller with an offer to help end the war. Off the coast of Greece, pilot Steve Trevor and his men are under attack, only to be saved by the Amazons and their princess Diana. In Moscow, Kortni Duginova and Kara Starikov fight with the Night Witches, an all-female air force. Kara inadvertently reveals her superpowers while trying to save Kortni.
In the second issue, Diana looks after a shell-shocked Steve Trevor and requests that the Amazons joins the Allies, but Queen Hippolyta turns down the request. When Diana finds out that Steve is due to be executed for trespassing, she works together with her friend Mera to break him out. In Moscow, Kara and Kortni are arrested for being traitors. When Kara reveals the truth of her powers, her superiors propose to take advantage of her powers and make the two girls propaganda tools. In Berlin, Zatanna works as a singer in a club run by the Joker's Daughter. She recognises one of the patrons as British spy John Constantine and the pair engage in a magical battle. The Joker's Daughter praises Zatanna's performance and notes that their master would be pleased. Zatanna is disgusted, but doesn't dare defy her boss as the Joker's Daughter knows she is Jewish.
In the third issue, the Joker's Daughter summons a monstrous being called Tenebrus the Binder. Tenebrus promises his allies the world as long as his people, Tenebrae, may have the dead. Terrified, Zatanna flees with with Constantine, who is still in rabbit form after their magic duel. In Gotham City, Amanda Waller welcomes Batwoman to the Bombshells. Her first mission is to infiltrate Berlin and make contact with Contessa Selina Digatti, known as the Catwoman. Meanwhile, Diana, Mera and Steve Trevor are attacked by Nazis off the coast of Greece. American troops led by Sam Lane witness Diana easily beating the enemy and begins to realise that the Amazon princess would make a fine addition to Waller's Bombshells.
In issue four, Kara and Kortni are disgusted at being turned into propaganda tools. Their refusal to kill and insistence on capturing the enemy displeases their superiors. When they are ordered to attack a Soviet prison, they refuse and defect. Meanwhile, in London, Doctor Harleen Quinzel, is treating one of her patients when she utters a phrase that causes Harleen to lose her mind and become Harley Quinn. Over in Greece, Wonder Woman spends her time fighting the Nazis and helping Steve Trevor pull himself together. When the commanding American officers orders enemy soldiers to be executed, Diana interferes and insists that prisoners must face trial. This causes the American soldiers to movie in on her.
In issue five, Batwoman makes it to Berlin and meets with Alexander Luthor, who introduces her to Catwoman. Thanks to Catwoman, Batwoman attends a secret ritual where the Joker's Daughter turns a deceased German soldier into a Tenebrae. Meanwhile, Harley Quinn arrives in France and ends up in the greenhouse of black market smuggler Pamela Ysley. Harley saves Pamela from enemy soldiers and the pair head off to Berlin. In Russia, Supergirl and Stargirl take the prisoners of the Soviet prison to safety and head back to their home village to save their parents.
In issue six, Mera aids the Royal Navy against a U-Boat manned by Tenebrae and chats with the British sailors. The party is interrupted by Supergirl and Stargirl, who seek asylum on the British ship. Meanwhile in Berlin, Batwoman meets Helena, leader of the German Resistance. They do battle with the Tenebrae as well. In Greece, Wonder Woman escapes from imprisonment for disobeying orders. Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy rampage through France. In Berlin, Zatanna learns who John Constantine really works for.
I have to say that the idea of an all-female team of superheroes fighting the Axis Powers intrigues me. In this world the only super-powered individuals are women. I guess the men are too busy slaughtering each other on the battlefield and it comes down to the women to sort the mess out.
The idea of a comics series based on variant covers inspired by old-timey pin-ups could have been an excuse for gratuitous fanservice, but this series is more than that. It might help that much of the creative team is female. While the art is undeniably sexy in parts, it isn't gratuitously so. This is a comic book series where beautiful women beat up Nazis. What's not to enjoy?
My rating: 3.5 stars.
