I think she'd have several reasons to overthink it. Besides, he assigned her his weekend surveillance shift in page 47. So since she's here, on the weekend that she was supposed to be doing his shift, she's almost certainly in some kind of trouble. I mean, she got Yuri to take the shift for her, but she was specifically assigned the shift as a penalty for being late to an important meeting, and I'm pretty sure he wouldn't be ok with her just dumping her punishment on someone else.

She appears to be doomed.

well technically...he can only put her on KP or latrine duty he can't actually fire her. Military structure only an OFFICER can start the procedure for a discharge. any officer can reccomend it but only her COMMANDING OFFICER (and sargent isn't one it's the highest set of ranks for enlisted but not an actual officer) can make the decision of whether or not she is discharged from the military.

The U.S. and U.K. Army rank structure is very different. Marellis might be 12-15 years in service to get the rank he has, Star may be 6-8 years in service for her rank. But, you are correct, Marellis may not officially be able to start proceedings against her, but he can recommend them, and an officer would listen to him in his position.

However, I don't think that's going to happen, either. First of all, as stern and foreboding Marellis is, I think he has a soft spot in his heart for her. Maybe he sees something of his younger self in her, recognizes something about her, and is trying to help to shape her to be the best person she can be. Or, I could just be out in left field, too!

Who knows, I don't think Marellis is married, Ms. Flake could be his GIRLFRIEND! How about THAT!!??

it's not that different. both of my parents are retired US. Army. Dad served 22 years and only made it to sargent first class (E7 rank 2nd highest rank there is for enlisted) and mom made Staff Sargent only (E6) after only 20 years. dad was hire because he had actual combat time during the vietnam war while mom was only a vietnam war ERA veteran by serving during that time and being confined to a base (women weren't allowed in combat at the time still)

I’m afraid I must disagree. In a best case scenario she might actually find a common ground with him through this scene on which they might be able to build an improved working relationship. Star herself did just speculate from him being there that maybe he’s a good guy.

I dunno, we'll have to see. There's no doubt that 'Star' is pretty danged smart. (Sammy is, too!) She's quick on her paws, but I think it would take ME a week or so to get calmed down, had I been in her booties and mittens!

This is wonderful. And I have this suspicion that Uncle Matt is going to turn out to be much more of a lovable character (*caretaker*) than we've seen so far. When someone with that stressful of a job gets to let go of all the walls they have to keep up during the day, you can be surprised by the soft side they keep hidden.
