The world is not peaceful and in the Hindu tradition it is firmly established that being passive is neither wise nor permissible in the face of evil.
To this end the deities often take fierce forms to protect devotees and combat evil. On display are three gods who are called upon to defeat black magic. In so much to their active and fiery nature, it is not surprise the lion became the animal of choice to display ferocity and strike fear into the demonic.
Sitting is Lady Pratyangira, the lion faced manifestation of Durga/ Shakti, goddess of energy. She sits atop Lord Sarabeshwara, a wrathful form of Lord Shiva, god of destruction. Above them is Lord Narasimha, avatar of lord Vishnu who has taken the form of the mythical Gandaberunda bird.
Which one of these is more powerful will largely depend on who you ask. Those of Shaktism will say Pratyangira. The Shivites will say Sarabeshwara and Viashnavites will say Narasimha; with competing mythologies of each god out-doing the others. So I say, have all three and let those of demoniac nature beware.
