The pose is supposed to reflect the key guard as depicted in Joachim Meyer's book 'The Art of Combat'. It's actually less a book and more a combat manual depicting the use of various different weapons and martial arts from his time.
Or TL;DR: He short, he need guard top, he want be relaxed when do it, so Key Guard.

If hes that short an even higher Guard might be better to defend his head and body but if the he tires quickly the Keyguard is better for him.
That being said i did Medieval Swordfighting (Lichtenauer & Talhofer) for a few years myself and have two or three of those Books. ^^
