I've never done an art meme before (I don't think?) but this one looked fun ... hehe.. and it was a nice break between working on commissions...
1. rough, but yeah. thats basically how I draw when I'm not really thinking about style.
2. the 90's! it buurns! I still have old drawings like this somewhere.
3. Haruhiko Mikimoto's style... In drawing this I realized what I really like about it is the variance in line width, and how sparkly the eyes are. I find the style to be incredibly feminine... and I didn't do it justice.
4. hngh.... Ren and Stimpy and other similar American cartoons are just hideous.
5. Probably the most influencial show on my style, ever. Behind Sailor Moon would be the Lion King, and Balto.
6. http://www.furaffinity.net/view/2776147/ Complements to Goldenrod for the fine sketch =). It was fun to draw in this toony style.

Ah, the interesting nature of adapting styles.
And some of the newer American cartoons are about the same... what hadn't turned me off from just listening to some when I was at my uncle's... yeah. Looking up from the laptop did it. I decided I'd rather end up entertaining the other younger crowd by joining them in a game of Wii bowling.

It wasn't that the Ren and Stimpy style was bad, it's just that it was usually done for extreme grossout... Nick would later use a very similar 'squiggly style' for much better shows like Aaaah! Real Monsters, The Wild Thornberries, As Told By Ginger, Doug, and Rocko's Modern Life (although they also used it for Rocket Power and Ripping Friends, so yeah).
Oh I never said it was bad - I know what they were trying to do, and they pulled it off fantastically. Just looking at the style I can see bulging veins, wads of gunk between teeth and mucus dripping out of their noses.... and I don't particularly like all of those associations - haha.
Doug was released at the same time as Ren and Stimpy, though - I remember 'the day' that they released the nicktoons - and I liked Doug and Rugrats, but Ren and Stimpy I wasn't sure about. To be honest, I preferred the days when Nickelodeon showed The Adventures of the Little Koala, The Noozles, Grimm's Fairy Tales, etc.

Oh gosh, apparently you're only supposed to dislike styles that other people dislike 6_9 Just because the Ren&Stimpy style was supposed to be grotesque doesn't mean a person has to like it any.
I think your execution in #3 is awesome, nearly dead on -- haha, as well as #5, as horribly wonky as the Sailor Moon style is.

1) D'awww. Your current style is very universal and still has so much personality. It's why I take so much pride in choosing you to draw Sake Woozle. You gave such a wonderful look at his personality.
2)Lol, I was trying to immitate my brother so by age 7 I was copying out of Mermaid Scar books. But yes, the nineties hit a lot of us :3
3) I think I became far more familliar with Mikimoto's style upon Macross 2. ( Though I'm not sure if it was the original Macross she worked on as well) But I agree. I honestly think though that yours is a lot more flexible and leaves a lot more room for things like masculinity without over tooning if that makes sense. I think, personally if I see your work advance from this point, it's own personal direction would be far more unique than Haruhino Mikimoto's with no offense toward them. :3
4) Buh... awww.... John K. is such a cool guy too! XP Say what you want about the style, they are fun as hell to animate. (I'm not giving you crap I promise.) John K. Comes from the Ralph Bakshi school of animation and visual style. While so many people love Bakshi's work ( Fritz the Cat, Wizards, American Pop, Cool World) I find his stuff incomplete and I really don't find his stuff appealing at all. I think though, part of that appeal comes from it's countercultural subtext.
5) Ohhh Naoko Takeuchi. XP I wanted to be one of the Dinosaucers.
6) I got nothin.

1. Thanks very much =D...
3. Yeah, Macross 2 it was very evident (I love Ishtar's character design) - as well as the Macross 1984 summer movie - and even on into the 90's with Tekkaman Blade (not so much the anime itself as much as the promo art) I agree that the style isn't all that versatile, but for what it is, its surely eye candy to me..
4. I'm all for artists taking new and different approaches - and part of conceptualizing art is definitely about how to make the viewer feel - so I agree with everyone thats stated so that the objective of the art was achieved rather well. So as art, it is a success.... but much like the paintings of Lucian Freud, the feelings it evokes in me are those I don't like... And I'm totally not bashing anybody who likes it, either. We can disagree and still be friends ^.^
5. You know, I thought about drawing in Takeuchi's manga style - but that was after the fact. Her characters were so flowy and leggy. And oh man, I LOVED the Dinosaucers! =D

Oh I didn't take it as offense. I just think John K. is at the very least a little more refined with his work. But I do agree on some levels with you though.
1984 summer movie? Do tell. I have a bit of a Macross collection on my end. I have the original, Plus (and the movie), 2, and the remake of "Do You Remember Love"

Ooh.. hehe - well, I wasn't terribly interested in doing a good job on #4 so I rushed it so I could move on to Sailor Moon
And the 1984 summer movie is "Do you remember love" - it just originally had a really long name - "Super Dimensional Space Fortress SDF-1 Macross The Love Story Do You Remember Love" - but my wife always referred to it as the 1984 summer movie, so thats how I remember it... Oh anime and the crazylong titles ^.^...

American animation for children tends toward one of two styles: 1. the intentionally poorly drawn, almost abstracted style in all those shitty cartoons shown during the day on Cartoon Network (can't even remember the name of any of them TBH), or 2. super-slick but ultimately boring and artificial computer-generated drek like Up and whatever that faggot movie about the kids was where they were all scared of some house or something. Since Shrek started that trend, I blame Dreamworks.
I want to see (and it will NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN in the US), a wholly hand-drawn and painted cel-based animated movie. No CGI, no computer tricks, no fucking rotoscoping, nothing. Just artists who know how to draw and paint.
Nice meme feat though.
