This is 12-K. He was a laboratory research subject, and his life was saved by Take-Your-Daughter-To-Work day. The research head brought his five-year-old girl in to see the cognitive tests they were running on one of the critters- move a simple block puzzle to get to some grub-filled sand, that sort of thing- and the girl was quite entertained and asked what they planned on doing with 12-K once he finished his puzzles. Not having the heart to tell her that the subjects were destroyed after testing was finished, the research head told his daughter that they were going to bring this guy home as a reward for doing his puzzles so well. 12-K became known as Thaddeus, and he did wonders for the garden as long as he was fenced around plants with deep roots.
