A gift fo someone very close to me. As she's a metalsmith I wanted to do a character design for her that tied that into her persona. And so, taking that concept a little further, the idea for a runesmith was forged - pun intended. There are areas of this piece that are rougher than others, but I don't like obsessing over parts of a piece that have little or no impact on a piece other than their presence in it. That also makes more detailed areas "pop" easily.
The Concept: Runesmiths are magical blacksmiths; they use runes as both part of their work and part of their product. In the image, there are three active runesets; back above the forge, runes arranged in an arc are temperature control, maintaining a constant temperature in the forge while also using very little fuel and stoking. The runes along the seam of the leather leggings are an advanced fire ward, keeping her cool and protecting her from sparks and smoke. And lastly, the runes floating about the hammer are something of a "truestrike" runeset; her mental focus helps to determine the accuracy and skill with each strike, along with natural strength and dexterity.
She's a betsune; half bear, half kitsune (believe me, it fits her). As she has a great many tails, she has the equivalent of an attached smith's table/bench; tongs, hammers, pliers, all attached on leather thongs and readily accessible without having to resort to a toolbox or moving back and forth from a table to the anvil.

Thank ya for the comment! In this world there are few things left that are completely fresh and new, so a lot of concept design focuses on the "little things" to differentiate ideas. How many published "Boy Hero" characters are out there? How many feel different despite a common base?
I always assume that somewhere out there my newest idea's been "done" already - but that's something that spurs me on to come up with something to add or take away to make the design not "new," but autonomous. If she were, say, a hammock smith all covered in ropes and an array of karabiners, that'd be much more off-the-wall! Now if only I could find a useful place for a design like that... :]

That'd be rather novel, yes! Don't know if it would fit the recipient of the gift so well, though. XD Then again, for all I know, it might. There are some wonderfully crafty people out there.
It's a marvelous piece. I've come back to it four times so far just to re-eyeball the light. The 'coarseness' of texture that was remarked actually seems to help with the effect of the light in several places. It really is a nice piece, and I'm sure the recipient appreciated it.

Your work is absolutely breathtakingly magical. I feel as if I am there with the characters in their world when I gaze into your art. The work you do with lighting is incredible creating realistic glows and fancifully dancing shadows and runes.
My only concern for the piece is the idea of strapping a heavy blacksmithing hammer to your tail, I would think that would be a big ouch!

A rather unusual mix of species, but it works out very well. She has a physical presence that is very appropriate for her profession, and her fox-like features give her an otherworldly air that would be very appropriate for an arcane blacksmith. The shadowy, earthen colors with a hint of blue also contribute well to this theme. Great work!
