New Orleans detective Wes Block's (Clint Eastwood) latest case is investigating the deaths of several sex workers. Because of the sexual nature of the crimes and the belief that a serial killer is at work, counsellor Beryl Thibodeaux (Geneviève Bujold) insinuates herself into the investigation. The two initially get off to a rocky start, but they eventually start to have a relationship together. As Block delves deeper into the investigation and more victims surface, he comes to the conclusion that the killer is following his every move and the people that he cares about the most might end up becoming the next victims.
Whenever I see a movie is about Clint Eastwood playing a cop I automatically assume it's going to be something like Dirty Harry. Oh, Tightrope? That's Dirty Harry in New Orleans, right? It shows you how much I know. Wes Block is much nicer than Harry Callahan for a start. He is a loving family man as well. You couldn't picture Harry Callahan taking his daughters out for Mardi Gras, could you?
I was a bit cautious when I saw that this was an erotic thriller as well. In my experience, erotic thrillers are little more than mucky films with a plot. Maybe that says more about me than the actual contents of the films. Thankfully, the sexy stuff doesn't overpower the actual story. I shouldn't be to bothered by the fact that there is sexy stuff in this film, it's about a serial killer targeting sex workers so you would expect there to be naked ladies in there somewhere.
Clint Eastwood is fine in the lead role and it was nice to see him play something different than his usual tough guy cop roles. There was one thign that bothered me about the film though. For a film that was set and filmed in New Orleans, nobody has an authentic accent. Geneviève Bujold is the only one who has an accent, but I guess that's her natural French-Canadian accent.
My rating: 3 stars.
