I saw a rat that looked like this today at PetSmart (In addition to contacting rat rescues/breeders, I have been window-shopping), and damn if his hair on top of his head doesn't look like AXEL from Kingdom hearts. I got so close to buying him (he was sweet and docile, which is what I am looking for) that the guy got annoyed because I kept calling him over and then changing my mind. xD
But what I want to know is, is this type of marking common? Does it have a name? It looks like a brown "cap"-type marking on a black rat! It's soo cool!
If it's an uncommon marking, I might just go back and pick him up, I liked him. xD None of the rescue places/breeders are responding to me! D:
but yeah...that's why I drew this...to ask if any of you can identify this type of marking. They had two in there like this, but the other was younger/crazy, and I'm looking for docile. xD

D'awww...just outta curiosity, what rescue are you going through? I've been using this forum to try to find a ratty: http://www.goosemoose.com/component.....,rat/board,5.0
But so far I haven't gotten any replies!

I know I doooooo. xD but there's also a breeder's rat I saw today who is in HORRIBLE shape, and I kinda want to help him out...they said she'll see if they can sell him to me. He's so antisocial, but they didn't give him an igloo, so he BURIES HIMSELF IN THE BEDDING. It was so sad D:
Yeah, I've been reading up on what to do with rats like that, because my friend just adopted one with the same problem (but his is admittedly MUCH worse). If they decide to sell him to me, he will need a lot of work because...
1) He was seriously injured by one of the females he was being mated with and NEEDS to get that taken care of
2) He has severe social problems
3) He migh have fleas...I saw what looked like flea eggs on his back...ugh, that sucks for a rat... ;_;

Aww...poor hammy...
Yeah, the past few days, I have seen some very sad things...rats in pet stores that are sick, and I know the new owners won't take them to the vet...or rats that are alone and will be sold alone... The pet store people don't suggest that you buy two...but they should!

Black with white underbelly leads me to believe Berkshire. However Im unsure about the brown cap on his head. Capped rats usually have their whole head a certain color if I'm right. I'm leaning towards patched. Being they have spots on their heads in various places. *nods*
Might want to get a second opinion, but that's what I'm thinking.

But if you want, here is a page about fancy rats:

Oh, lawlz, well I still would have kept him even if he did lose those markings X3
Cuz I hardly ever see black rats D:
Grey rats on the other hand...I see 'em all the time.
I had a small rat with this really neat white stripe going down the middle of her face. The rest of her was back, and she had a white belly. She was the one who lasted 5 years :3

Awww, did you? :3
I'm kinda crazy right now, I keep checking my emails, keep refreshing the adoption message board on www.goosemoose.com, and trying my search again on petfinder. x3

To me I think he's a hybrid. The closest thing to his markings I would think would be 'capped,' http://www.ratsauce.com/breeds/inde.....p;title=Capped however, the 'cap' doesn't go around his eyes. Could very well be a hybrid of Masked, http://www.ratsauce.com/breeds/inde.....p;title=Masked But at the same time it's difficult to tell. I'd say he/she was just a hybrid of a Berkshire.
I had one boy, named Zim, all white, save for two spots, one around his right ear... and on his rump, and he had red eyes. There was nothing that I can actually match him with, which made me even more happy just because he was so unique.

We have a few like that at our store. (Works at PetSmart). That is basically a Mutt rat. The breeders we get our rats from try to breed more for temperament and health than looks. But at a glance, I would say a Black Berkshire / Beige Cape cross. I know this is an OLD post but I figured I'd add my 2 cents.
Rats are such awesome pets. I have owned 6 and have fostered over 10.

xD That's OK, thank you for the input!
I learned that when rats have a marking like this, it can disappear as they get older? That's something someone told me when I described it. Like, the fur hasn't completely grown in in some spots, or something. x3
I love rats! I have owned...11! xD Wow. That's a lot!

Siamese tend to be born a weird dark beige colour, without any points on them so they look nothing like siamese. Then as they grow, the dark nose and bum points come in, but the beige colour kinda fades to golden, but can moult out in patches all over their body which makes them look like they're dirty! Then they get more pale and eventually turn white-ish. Its really odd to see.
