Looks as though someone started to clean the left side. Some of these carvers leave deeply incised text guide lines that last for ages. Graphite pencils wouldn't become readily available in the U.S. until Henry David Thoreau (yes, Mr. Walden) developed a very good type in 1821, too late for the Cushmans.
