After the death of his father in Captain America: Civil War, T'Challa (Cadwick Boseman) returns home to the reclusive, technologically-advanced nation of Wakanda to take his rightful place on the throne. However, the forces of Erik 'Killmonger' Stevens (Michael B. Jordan) and arms dealer Ulysses Klau (Andy Serkis) seek to destroy Wakanda from within and usurp the throne. Fortunately, T-Challa has aid in the form of his tech genius sister Shuri (Letitia Wright), Wakandan intelligence agent Nakia (Lupita Nyongo), his all-female band of bodyguards the Dora Milaje led by General Okoye (Danai Gurira) as well as CIA agent Everett Ross (Martin Freeman).
There is always a danger that movies that gets loads of hype before they are realised turn out to be not quite as good as everybody has been making them out to be. I have been burned before by movies being massively over-hyped (I'm looking at you, The Dark Knight), but I'm glad that this movie definitely deserves the hype. That being said, I have to point out the claim that this is the first ever Marvel movie with a black lead is wrong as the Blade movies came before this one. Only the first two Blade movies count. We don't talk about Blade Trinity.
Chadwick Boseman is great as the Black Panther, but there are so many outstanding supporting characters that he is in danger of being overshadowed in his own movie. Everybody seems to have taken Shuri into there hearts and it is easy to see why. She is an adorkable tech genius that doesn't pass up an excuse to troll her brother, just like any other embarrassing little sister. Then there is Okoye, the leader of the Dora Milaje. She might seem like any other severe bodyguard, but she isn't afraid to troll her king either. It is always amusing to see her stoic exterior drop as she joins Shuri in teasing T'Challa. Let's just say that all of the female characters in this movie are great.
Marvel continues with their run of memorable villains with Killmonger. It helps that he has a sympathetic backstory as well. A lot of people had written off Michael B. Jordan after that terrible Fantastic Four movie, but now many people regard him as the best part of the movie. Let's not forget Ulysses Klau. I love Killmonger's swagger, but I also loved Klau's sheer hamminess. Andy Serkis was clearly having the time of his life in the part.
M'Baku (or as he is called in the comics 'Man-Ape') was much more of an enjoyable character than he was in the comics. The comics version of M'Baku always was a bit cringey, so it was refreshing to see that the filmmakers change his character for the movie. He is another character to takes delight in being a lovable troll to everybody else. For instance, the scene where he threatens to feed Agent Ross to his children before revealing that they are in fact vegetarians. It seems that M'Baku is aware of the killer gorilla stereotype and plays it up for his own amusement.
My rating: 4 stars.
